HEALTH BENEFITS OF SELECTED LOCAL SPICES AND CONDIMENTS:A LITERATURE REVIEW

This paper looked at the health benefits of selected local spices and discussed the significant role and how the nutritive value of food could play a role in maintenance of good health and sustenance of life. Every edible food plants has their own major nutrients. Spices are edible plant which could be used raw in food preparation or dried and ground into powdered form. The spices reviewed in this paper include Aiden, Negro pepper, Nutmeg, African locust bean, West African pepper and Turmeric. The nutritive value of the spices and their chemical contents were proven to function like drugs to prevent and manage diseases, if included in diet daily to help live healthy as one aged gracefully. It is therefore recommended that serious attention should be given to local spices by using it in preparing food.References
